  • Response to All

{Measures to tackle alcohol abuse by stopping cut-price offers have been outlined by the Scottish Government.

It has proposed a range of measures including the radical step of a minimum price per unit. It would be the first country in Europe to take the step.

The minority government said it also plans to ban discount deals on alcohol.

SNP ministers decided against raising the off-sales age limit to 21 - but will create powers to allow such curbs to be imposed on a local basis.

Local chief constables will also be able to request such a move.

Other measures include restricting the display and marketing of drink to specific areas within off-sales premises.

Scottish ministers also plan to create legal powers to introduce a "social responsibility fee" for some retailers.

They decided not to go ahead with proposals to introduce alcohol-only checkouts in supermarkets and shops.}

OK,good idea or not??

Speaking for myself, I'm not in favour of penalising moderate drinkers,but.... some of you guys may have other views???

{.its never too cold is it? }

Depends where one proposes to undertake the act I suppose?

I just think this latest 'cunning plan' will go down like a dose of bromide at an orgy.

This just goes to show how truly " British " the SNP really is.  They cannot leave people alone, they must do something which is " good for them "  ie  !!!   something that they do not want.

This shower are nothing but modern liberals in national dress.

As you say it will hit a lot of moderate drinkers.

But alcohol is a massive problem, both in Scotland and England and cost society (business, health etc. a vast amount of money.

I'd be all for them increasing the cost of alcohol across the UK, but only if the money raised as a result, went to improve the services for people with alcohol problems, which are woefully inadequate, and on related health prevention and treatment.

I'd hate to see the price go up just to swell Government coffers .... which I think our Government would do .... and be spent on totally unrelated things.

Thankfully the Lib-Dems haven't caught on to this yet.

It'll not work whoever does it.

Addicts of any kind will pay any price to get to their fix of whatever it is that sustains them.

Witness the drug related crime we see.

All that'll happen is tax revenues will increase in line with prices.

And that I suspect is the REAL modus vivandi here.
